Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag — A Pirate's Tale
1. The Rise of Edward Kenway
Set in 1715, the story follows Edward Kenway, a charismatic yet selfish privateer turned pirate. Unlike previous protagonists, Edward isn't born into the Brotherhood; he stumbles into the conflict after killing a rogue Assassin and stealing his identity to claim a massive reward.
His greed leads him to the Templar Order, who are searching for "The Observatory"—a precursor site that allows its user to spy on anyone in the world.
2. Life on the High Seas
Edward becomes the captain of the Jackdaw, his highly customizable ship. Alongside his quartermaster and friend Adéwalé, Edward sails the West Indies, rubbing shoulders with legendary pirates like Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, and Anne Bonny.
While the pirates dream of a "Pirate Republic" in Nassau—a place free from the tyranny of Kings—the Templars work in the shadows to dismantle their freedom and seize control of the Caribbean.
3. The Conflict of Creeds
For much of the story, Edward ignores the Assassin’s Creed, focusing instead on finding the Observatory to make himself a man of fortune. However, as the British and Spanish empires crack down on piracy, Edward watches his friends die or betray their ideals.
Through the guidance of the Assassins in Tulum, Edward begins to realize that the "Absolute Freedom" he seeks leads only to chaos, while the Templars' "Order" leads only to slavery.
4. The Observatory and Redemption
Edward eventually finds the Sage (a man named Roberts who possesses memories of the First Civilization) to gain access to the Observatory. After being betrayed and imprisoned, Edward suffers a personal breakdown, losing nearly everyone he loves.
Seeking redemption, he officially joins the Assassin Brotherhood to stop the Templar Grand Master, Laureano de Torres, from using the Observatory to blackmail the world's leaders.
5. The Legacy
The game ends with a reformed Edward retiring from piracy and moving to London, where he meets his young daughter, Jennifer. (Fun Fact: Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor from AC3!)
In the modern day, you play as an Abstergo Entertainment employee researching Edward’s memories under the guise of making a pirate movie, while secretly being manipulated by a modern-day Sage.
